A look into the mind of the Monster.

10.11.20

The Chivalric Virtues: A Musing by Monster.

The Chivalric Virtues: A Musing by Monster.

The Chivalric Virtues are something I spend a lot of time thinking about, and not just in the SCA context. This is NOT a conversation limited to SCA context, even though that will likely be the audience.

Preface:

The discussion of said Virtues is a snarly subject, compounded by the fact that there are different lists and versions.

Are there 5? 12? 4? 7? (there are MANY versions/list of Virtues)

The list I find I gravitate to are these 7 terms:

Courage

Nobility

Loyalty

Mercy

Largesse

Humility

Franchise

[The words I choose to name the Virtues themselves inform my views, one could replace Loyalty with Obedience and ALMOST say the same thing….but not quite as we will see.]

Franchise:

The first Virtue I would like to discuss is, in my mind, one often overlooked or nebulously defined but the most crucial in my view...Franchise.

What the HELL is Franchise? As I use it...simply put…..Accountability.

It is to always strive to embody all the other Virtues without compromises in one's commitment to any of them.

To be able to see in oneself errors and failing in the Virtues, and to publicly not only accept the weight of that error but put forward amends in a public and active way, far and away from a simple apology. In addressing and changing behavior and attitudes that have caused any form of hurt or harm.
To some it means ‘Bearing’ or the SCAism of PLQs.(Peer Like Qualities).

To me, it is the core value of all Good, Right and Just actions, for it is outward facing and weighs more heavily how my actions affect OTHERS than myself.

Without Franchise….it all falls down.

Loyalty:

As I alluded to above, Loyalty and Obedience are often used as synonyms, but I find them quite divergent.
Loyalty is not the fawning following of Orders or Proclamations….it is a thing of the spirit.
Prima Facie adherence to commands is Obedience, whereas fulfilment of vows and responsibilities is Loyalty.
It is the difference between following orders, and fulfilling intent and anyone who has ever served or studied military history should plainly see the contrast.
A just person could, through Obedience, commit atrocities at the order of a leader.
Loyalty requires one to speak up when a leader oversteps, and offer counsel.
Loyalty also requires one as a leader to maintain good faith and care of those in their charge.
It should never be Loyalty to a person, rank or even country/kingdom.
It needs to be a Loyalty to Ideals.

Courage:

Courage means many things, and has distinct flavors.
There is Courage of the Body. The willingness to face hazard and harm of self in the pursuit of the Virtues and ideals.
To stand aside as others are persecuted or ‘bullied’ in order to remain safe in one’s self is a failing of Courage of the Body.
There is Courage of the Spirit. The willingness to face social consequences and ‘fallout’ from a stance or the defense of a Virtue and ideal.
To allow an unfair, or untrue statement to pass unchallenged because the act of challenging it makes one the target of ire is a failing of Courage of the Spirit.
There is not much else I have to say on this Virtue other than when it is needed...it is needed direly.

Largesse:

Largesse is another Virtue that has similar synonyms and interpretations...but the use of them slightly imparts a different meaning.
Often Generosity is used as a synonym and it is not a BAD one….but it lacks for me a component.
Largess is also often taken to mean gifts and physical items...and while that can be Largesse to me, a key item is to WHOM said gifts are given. Largesse is better defined as going DOWN than UP.
An SCA Example:
Gifting a new person an item to improve their efforts is Largesse.
Gifting the Crown goods and items is Humility...the Crown then giving those same goods and items to the populace is Largesse.
Additionally...Largesse need not be in items and goods, it can(and should) most commonly be in time, and love. To give of your time to help teach, guide or mentor a person is Largesse.
[Note: the same Down/Up dichotomy exists here.
Down is Largesse, Up is Humility, and since I have mentioned it twice now...]

Humility:
Humility as a Virtue is to acknowledge that one also SERVES no matter their rank or position.
One can serve a Crown/Leader, and one can serve a recruit with the same Humility. It is to acknowledge that you in fact are a student, even as one teaches. It is to put aside one’s own goals and ambitions for the achievement of a greater goal, and in doing so achieve more together than alone.

Mercy:

My original list had Wisdom on it instead of Mercy, however on reflection I found that Wisdom is but a part of Mercy...therefore I made a change.
One should always work to find a way to teach, correct and motivate others without causing harm and hurt. It is ALSO accepting others efforts at Franchise, and helping to foster the same.
It is in knowing when one must use Courage, and when one must apply Mercy that is Wisdom.

Nobility:
Nobility is a slippery one to grab. The best I can do is this, Nobility is one holding oneself to the Virtues even when no one is watching. It is to do the right thing, with no expectation of recognition or gain/reward. Nobility is to be more invested in another’s success than one’s own.

Special Note:
Yes...my list lacks Prowess.
Prowess is often(especially in SCA circles) deeply linked with the Virtues, and is in fact often the de facto defining characteristic of the Chivalric idea in the SCA…...and while I do not fully agree with that viewpoint in a larger global sense, I see the intent.
However, one need not have buckets of Prowess to be Knightly.
And Prowess by itself is not in fact REQUIRED to be Knightly….simply to be considered for elevation to the Order of Chivalry in the SCA.

On Almost Human

Ok…fair warning. This is gonna be a long one. That said, if you are a fan of Sci Fi media, and if you are one of my ‘people’ I am gonna guess you are, you really should stay for this.

Today is a dark day…again. Almost Human got its walking papers…the axe…the heave-ho…the Big C…Canceled.
Big shock right? I hear it already… “It was SO good?” “FOX lets us down again!” “Firefly!!”
Well…yes and no.
Is this FOX’s fault? Yes….partly. But ya know who else is on the hook? Me, you and every other Sci-Fi fan. We are getting exactly what we deserve…at least if you expect the standard TV/Media model to keep working…even though it is completely busted. If you expect content to keep coming and you to consume it at your leisure….this is what ya get. Ya get canceled.

Today I have seen 28 posts on Social Media about how Almost Human is canceled….I have seen 28 posts bemoaning the loss of another “Good show”.
That is WAY more posts than I ever saw about the show when it was on….when you could go watch episodes FOR FREE on a dedicated website from FOX.
Why? Apathy and Loving to Hate. These are easy…it’s easy to bemoan and hard to cheerlead. How many Browncoats are there? How many of them WATCHED the show when it was on? How many since it got canceled? Based on my completely unscientific study of just asking people who talk to me about Firefly…less than half ever watched the show as it was broadcast. Most ‘found’ Firefly long after it was dead. This is not to say FOX didn’t handle Firefly poorly…they certainly did…but we the members of Fandom have got blood on our hands too.

Look folks, there are only 5 reasons any show, regardless of genre is ever made or dies. Those 5 reasons, in no specific order are: Money, Money, Money, Money and MONEY.
That’s it….that’s all.
Money.
It is hard, thankless, EXPENSIVE work to make media…I know this personally. Sci Fi is harder still…mostly because the bar is set so damn high. Sci Fi productions are by their nature costly…understandable due in no large part to the fact you have to create a whole new world: Locations, costumes, tech, and all the inherent heavy lifting in VFX. All of that on top of the solid writing and great acting that are the foundations of any media. Miss the mark on any of those…and prepare to be destroyed by Fandom.

All that to say this: It’s our fault as much as theirs.

I am not one to complain without offering ideas of what to do to fix the problem…so here are a couple of ideas.
One: Spend a little time talking about stuff before it gets canceled. Put forth a portion of that energy to make sure people are aware of good media…there is a lot of static, if you find a good show SHARE IT!

Two: We, as Fandom, need to take a long hard look at what we expect for cheap as free. We need to accept that commercials/product placement and pay-walls are what pay the bills.

Three: We need to be willing to challenge the model. We need to risk a little to gain control of our media’s future. We need to support productions…with MONEY not just social media. In today’s world…there is no reason to let networks have our shows. We can, and should own them. Kickstarter, Subbable, Indie Reign, Selfy…these (and some stuff that isn’t even around yet) are the way media will be distributed in the future.
The future is now.
It needs to be…
If not us…who?

14.2.14

Of Dogs and Doctors.

So there is this “Inspirational Image” making the rounds on social media.

Ok…
This bothers me. I understand it is supposed to make the thought of death easier, more palatable even.
However I find this to be, for the most part a Not Good Thing™.
My issue is, in main, that it attempts to both relegate humans to the role of subservient ‘pet’ and to make that sound appealing. Your death is of no consequence because once you pass over you will be with your master. This idea also implicitly de-values life, and the effort to keep it.

Is the best answer to give a man concerned about his looming death, “Don’t worry, as soon as you can escape this pain and horror you will get a scratch on the head and a cookie.” How does that idea; that the answer to (a completely rational) fear is to just accept your Heavenly Reward, jive with the whole sanctity of life idea?
How about we treat the sickness? How about we apply every single thing we have at our disposal to lessen suffering, pain, and death. But to do that, we would have to make a couple of, what for theist seem to be, uncomfortable assumptions.

First, that we can trust science. That through biology and medical study we can actually change things about our own bodies and the world around us.
Secondly, and this seems to be a big one, that not only can we affect this changes but that we have a moral obligation to do so. That when presented with a choice/challenge; be it medical, social, or political WE have not only the ability to make decisions based on relative data…but we have the obligation to do so. To accept that we have accountability to ourselves and our fellow humans for these choices, and not to shunt that responsibility to some other entity.

In this instance, I am to find ‘inspirational’ the idea that if I just blindly love something I cannot see, then all things shall be well in the end?
Sorry, I want my doctor more worried about my white blood cell count than my relationship with the kennel owner in the sky.

As always, I ask that if you don't agree with me...please, please speak up.
I want to have discussions with folks that see thing differently.
Feel free to comment, just please keep it to a low roar...OK?

5.2.14

Tough Questions...err...not really.

Ok, So I know it's been a while since I wrote a Musings.
Mostly I have been sticking to FB and (gasp) Meat Space.
But ya might have heard about this little debate 'tween a couple of guys.
Bill Nye (THE SCIENCE GUY) and Ken Ham (The anything-but-science guy).
It was good...have a look if ya missed it.
For as long as it's up. Ken Ham and his Creation Museum(man, that is weird to type...) plan to sell DVD's at a pretty steep price, and of course they will then take the video down before doing so.

But that Dear Reader is not why we are here...these fine folks are.

Matt Stopera, of  BuzzFeed  asked 22 folks to jot down queries to Bill Nye prior to the debate.
I want to attempt to personally answer these folks, and hope that there is some kind of discourse.
So...

Off to the races we go!!

I would say he is. I mean…it’s not like he is advocating the idea that non-scientist be stoned? Or sent to hell? I mean….what’s the worst christendom has done? Oh yeah…The Crusades...right.

Are you scared of evidence? To the point wherein willful ignorance of the observable is to be even more ‘cherry-picked” than your holy text? (BTW>Passive aggressive much?) This is not so much a question as it is a trap. If no, then Heretic: if yes, then False Believer.

Yes. Yes it is. Sorry, but there is no model (other than, god did it!) that could even support that idea. Please give me one tiny shred of any kind that supports this idea...from anything other than a religious text.

Next two are so related they get the same answer...

[Note: Could this guy  above look more condescending?]

Does your understanding of Thermodynamics come from a fortune cookie? There is this thing called Sol…ya know…that big ball of plasma in the sky? It is constantly introducing energy into the open system we call Earth. Open System...as in...energy being constantly added, ergo the 'increased entropy' problem is moot.  I don't think you mean what you think you mean....but nice shot at using science to disprove science.

Really? Are we having this discussion in 21st or 15th century?
One word:   Heliocentric!

I assume, I hope correctly, you are referring to the idea of the 'Noetic effect' from Original Sin.
Pretty much as disproven as everything else Aristotle ever said. Look, Big A offered up some insights, and postulated the best ideas his observations and data could provide, but as we have gathered more data Aristotle's ideas have fallen away.

The next three are going to get the same response from me...

Philosophic arguments? Ya want meaning? I find mine in Green Lantern #256.
Is the world less amazing because of the fact we can observe and predict it? Or more so? These are ‘feeling’/philosophical arguments which, by their nature, are unsupportable by evidence, and empowered by willful ignorance of natural process.

You’re using bunk and fluff to support your idea. Please, evidence or at least the semblance of it...K?

Right now, we don’t know 100%. Chance is a good answer. Or as chance is more properly known...probability. Rattle enough chemicals around in a super-heated fluid long enough and things start bonding/breaking in interesting chemical reactions.

Ok...that's clever and cute. Quick put it on a card!! And? Are you so unwilling to have your views questioned that you use statements of surety as queries? I am willing to be queried and offer sources to defend my statements, not witty zingers.(Well...not JUST witty zingers..) I don't know what else to say here...

Ummm…we don’t. Those views exist way outside of accepted science. James Cameron is not representative of the scientific community. Prometheus was a work of fiction, and a not very good one IMHO.

Once again...we got a Two-fer!

Ok...you folks are just really mis-informed. Examples of more than 300 individuals of Australopithecus Afarensis have been discovered so far in Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia. None of them has been as complete as Lucy, however we do agree 300>1...right? Please?
http://www.columbia.edu/.../web/australopithecus/austro.html

Yup. Just as much or more so than non-metamorphosing organisms. Why do you think it doesn't? I'd really like to hear the rest of this...genuinely curious.

I am putting the next two together...since they are the same question again.

Sigh. One more time, all together now… A Theory (note the capital T?) as used by the scientific community doesn't mean a WAG. [WAG=Wild Ass Guess]. The definition is: a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that can incorporate facts, laws, inferences, and tested hypotheses. Please note, this is exactly the opposite of the manner which this stated in the second version of this question.
http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=6024&page=2
In no way does Creationism fit the definition of a Theory.
Not even a little bit....

Actually a pretty good question...although it seems to be  predicated on what I can only assume is an incomplete understanding of the idea. Gene duplication (or chromosomal duplication or gene amplification) is a major mechanism through which new genetic material is generated during molecular evolution. It can be defined as any duplication of a region of DNA that contains a gene. Gene duplications can arise as products of several types of errors in DNA replication and repair machinery as well as through fortuitous capture by selfish genetic elements. Common sources of gene duplication include ectopic homologous recombination, aneuploidy, polyploidy, and replication slippage. However, again I point out...good question.

Ok...a couple of restates again...

Yup. Can you believe in gravity without faith? Both are borne out by extensive testing, modeling and tons and tons of very head hurting math. We do agree math is a thing...right?
(BTW> One star made the cosmos? Dude...order of magnitude much?) Please review this… http://www.universetoday.com/106498/what-is-the-evidence-for-the-big-bang/
I mean…I’d offer more on this but. Would it help at this point?

OK....ready for the big one?

This one makes my teeth itch....

Le Sigh.
We did not come from monkeys, nor apes, nor yabba dabba do.
All primates (which YOU AND I  are) share a common progenitor.
There are still monkeys because they still fill a niche and have not been out competed.
Just like why there are still catfish even though there are trout.

Really....we did not come from monkeys.
Please stop thinking that.
Please find out what you hate so much....I read your source material, the only one Ham and other YEC accept. Yes the bible.
I am touching one right now.
It isn't even smoking.

24.7.12

Pennsic fever.

Tonight is the night. In truth this has been coming for days...but now it is here. I can't sleep. Normally, I shut down like a machine and sleep like a dead man. It is a skill I gained over years in the Army. Sleep for me is almost always easy, automatic and uncomplicated. Not tonight. There is a simple word why....but the reason is complex. PENNSIC. War comes. It is three AM and my hands are shaking so hard I can hardly type. Every time I close my eyes...I am on the field. It is not fear...it is excitement. It is joy. It is longing. A longing so deep and wide I don't know if I can make it to the other side. I need drums. I need to be so beaten and exhausted I can't help but sleep. I need to know that in the morning my Crown needs my sword sharp and fast. I need the peace that right now can only be found at War.

9.5.12

Wait...wha?

Ok, quick note from a mobile device....
I am sitting at a suburban Starbucks...anyone who knows me, knows how weird that sentence alone is, but my defense is it's a work thing.
However, I am marveling at an odd ill social function i am bearing witness to.
I consider myself a 'rider'....meaning I not only own motorcycles but ride the damn things every chance I get. Often not to get someplace but just to RIDE it.
As in turn miles on the clock...as in eat bugs...as in get a sore ass and often a weird sunburn.
I am surrounded by guys who are 'living the dream.'
They own motorcycles (several of them $10000+ machines)... And they rode them here to hang out.

At Starbucks.

I am used to the 'bar hopper' riders....the guys who ride from biker bar to biker bar to swagger around and act like outlaws for a ill bit.

But Starbucks?

Really?

In someway, society has failed these people. They can't even get 'being a antisocial badass' right.

Starbucks....wow.
I need to go eat some bugs.

L5 is now on YouTube!!

True...soooo true.

Go share it around folks...the more buzz we can get, the more steam we have for more episodes!

26.2.12

I know I shouldn't argue with the Internet....

L5 is doing really well...400,000 download in less than a week and the overall response has been positive.
There are those who don't understand what L5 is, and why we have done it the way we have. While most of the negitive response can be chalked up to people who just dislike things for fun...you know...Haters...some of it is just folks not understanding things.
A good example is on one of the many Sci-fi forums L5 has been mentioned on. One poster wrote a long post detailing many of the things they felt where "wrong" with L5. While everyone is entitled to their opinions, some of the items and information are just incorrect.
So....I am going to write an open letter here in my blog. I will not link to the forum post directly...if you want to find it do a little detective work.
The post reads as below...Original poster is in blue, my responses are in red text.

I'll watch it on YouTube too, and here's why: YouTube will be significant in the development of internet video as a business, and that interests me (probably more than this particular web series does). Bittorrent simply isn't significant because nobody is going to be investing significant money and promotion to develop that "business model."
Incorrect and uninformed…  Four major studios and about three dozen other publishers of video, games and software have lined up to endorse Bittorrent. They include 20th Century Fox, Lions Gate, MTV Networks, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and BitTorrent’s newest partner, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Inc.
It comes at a time when studios are signing deals with other companies too, including one between Viacom and rival start-up, Joost. The deals are likely to put pressure on Google’s YouTube. YouTube has dragged its heels on implementing a filtering technology to placate concerns studios have about pirated movies show up there. Reports emerged that YouTube will soon implement such technology, but the latest word is that there are “technical” difficulties.
http://venturebeat.com/2007/02/26/bittorrents-big-day/

I see that site is asking for donations, but what consumers really want is one place to go to get everything, not a bunch of sites all with their own shows. That's YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, and I'm sure Facebook is getting into the act.
However this is going to happen in the future, it will happen at aggregator sites like that. Internet series need to think of aggragator sites like movie theaters - if anyone is going to see your show, you need to get distribution where the average person is looking for content. The trailer is up at YouTube, why not put the whole series there, since it's available free anyway?

VODO is an aggregator. It is an aggregator of actual produced videos. You don’t have to wade thru 14000 videos of LOLCats and groin kicks to find a show. Netflix, Hulu and Facebook are (as of right now) only showing content created for other distribution models; Broadcast and Cable TV, Theatre releases and the like. None of the content available there is ‘original’, it’s all re-runs.

Screensavers etc as incentives is the right idea, but they'd probably get more response if they built the incentives around a community - which means there has to be a community at the site. There's a comments field, but for a vital, attractive community, you'll need something with the complexity and scope of TrekBBS, at minimum. (And I think there's a lot more that TrekBBS can be doing, but that's another discussion.) Which of course really means that the aggregator sites should be offering better tools for building communities, not the lame comments sections that now exist.
People will pay for virtual goods that enhance their standing in a community. You see that at TrekBBS - customizable title, that sort of thing. But first, they need to have a community and then value it. The free content attracts the community, and then you build your business model around the community. Free content is all over the place on the internet, but good communities that people value are far rarer. That's your real business. The content is just what you use to build your business. Trying to compete with an easily available commodity (content) is very hard; competing with a scarcer commodity (good, rewarding community) is easier.
The commodity we are ‘selling’ is the fact that you as the viewer have a direct vote in whether a show continues or not. Why let rooms full of people who don’t care about a show decide its fate? Firefly is a great example. Additionally, there is much more than screensavers. You can actually participate in productions, and get access to exclusive content/perks many of them actual physical items (scripts, art books, missson patches, hell ever pieces of camera used sets/costumes)

So maybe the solution is some kind of hybrid approach - have a presence on YouTube to attract attention (with the full series there, for free) and then use it to funnel people into a proprietary community which also starts out for free, and then you can ratchet up the microtransactions for community based goodies. And of course YouTube will share ad revenue if your show is popular enough there.

Any add revenue made by content creators from Youtube is approx. 0.04% of generated revenue. Youtube has no interest in supporting original programming directly. It is a way to shove the old broadcast model of adverts being the only revenue stream onto the internet.

PS, okay I watched the preview and once again, I'm flabbergasted that the achilles heel of these online projects always seems to be the actors. Why isn't it easier for productions to get talented wannabee actors eager to jump into anything, just to have it on their demo reel? LA is full of out of work actors. Even if they're producing this show in Chicago, there must be a few theater actors or something around - or maybe they should consider moving to production to LA.
The voice over actor (and ship's computer?) just isn't any good. The other actors don't really "pop" - even in a short promo, there should be something there to grab the audience, but they're just flat. Envision the BSG cast, people like James Edward Olmos or even previous unknowns like Katee Sackhoff in those roles - I guarantee they would have popped better.

You can feel however you like about the actors and acting…after you watch the actual product. Also...the point of this production, from a filmmaking aspect, is to show what can be done without having to succumb to the traditional Hollywood system.

When people are used to getting even highly professional content for free (via piracy), how are you ever going to get them to pay for content that is a lot less attractive than what they're used to?

Because it is made for them, with their participation and input, it is not a recycled show/movie that is available anywhere else.  The cost/benefit  for the viewer is directly participate to their interest in the product. If they want to see the production continue, they support it. That support need not always be monetary. Time, Money or Love.

23.2.12

I miss my guns as well....

There is an interesting article I stumbled upon, written by an Army Vet about what he misses from Iraq.

Iraq was not my war, either one. I worked in other places...The battles I fought are forgotten by most of the world.
But I remember, and even though I have more distance from that time in my life than Brian Mockenhaupt , we are neighbors in the same shadowy real estate. I have good news and bad news for you Brian. It gets better.
It never goes away....not ever.

But it gets better.
Mostly.
